Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in males worldwide and sixth leading cause of cancer death in men. and approximately one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, though usually at an advanced age (99% occur in men older than 50). The 5-year survival rate for prostate cancer is 99% (in the United States) but monitoring and preventing this disease is an essential part of health prophylactics for men, especially as they get older.

Some of the risk factors for prostate cancer include:

  • Age
  • Family History
  • Ethnicity/Race
  • Obesity

Symptoms

Sometimes prostate cancer can present without symptoms so it is important to remember that prophylactic screening can be key. Some of the common symptoms associated with prostate cancer can include:

  • Urinary problems such as frequent need to urinate or bleeding while urinating
  • Sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction or blood in the semen

Prophylactics

Some of the technics that can be used for early detection of prostate cancer include a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test, a digital rectal exam or prostate imaging using an MRI or ultrasound. You should consult with your doctor as to what are the appropriate steps for you to take in that direction.
